Its true that its easy to get really focused on chronic pain and get kinda stuck there. But I think this author is pretty harsh about people who need to talk about their experiences with pain and feel comfort in knowing other people are in the same space. You cant get into the right spirit to fight pain unless you really understand whats going on in your mind and body and sometimes that means talking openly about it.

Suffering
It's amazing how pain can be a unifier. Even though this quote by Emerson was in reference to the death of his little boy, I think it attributable to all types of pain, "Sorrow makes us all children again, destroys all differences of intellect. The wisest knows nothing."

Get over it
I don't think the authors are harsh. Anyone who has lived with chronic pain knows that there is no simple fix and that you have to mobilize your mind and spirit to live with it. The first step is to stop thinking of yourself as a victim and reinforcing this point in support groups. I've been there.
