Why don't more fiction writers set their stories in the Philippines? Sugarland starts out as an ordinary mystery --San Francisco cop-- but as soon as the setting shifts to the Philippines and the "hot and liquid light" of the tropics, I was hooked. Now the story still sticks in my mind. A lovely surprise.
