The author, Erv Hinds, runs a pain clinic, so he knows how difficult it is for people to accept the truth when they experience chronic pain, and having accepted it, move on. For example, he points out that many people come to doctors expecting a magic cure that will make the pain go magically away, forever. It's difficult (painful!) to hear a doctor say that this won't happen, but that there are other things you can do that will require the effort of rethinking and some work. And he's right to criticize the culture of "woundology" that encourages pain suffers to focus endlessly on their problems, wasting time in support groups.
