About Author: 

Michael Murphy, born in Springfield, Massachusetts, received his B.A. in Philosophy from Holy Cross College and his doctoral degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. He lived for ten years in rural Vermont, serving as a clinician and director of a community mental health center in North Adams, Massachusetts. Now living with his family in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, he works as a psychologist for the Department of Corrections at the Treatment Center in Bridgewater, Massachusetts; as a founding member of the Family Consultation Team, officed in Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts; and as adjunct faculty at Lesley College graduate school. Michael is licensed as a psychologist in Massachusetts and Vermont and is certified as a forensic psychologist. He is a clinical member and approved supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He has worked with men’s groups for ten years and is himself the father of a blended family. He has received the Reilly Memorial Prize for outstanding creative writing, and his work has been included in an anthology of the best of the award-winning Family Therapy Networker magazine, and in the best-selling book Chicken Soup for the Soul .

Through The Family Consultation Team, Michael strives to support fathering and to serve families and other systems in the process of transition. Loving and empowered fathers are the key solution to the problem of violence and the creation of the safety essential to the healthy development of children. In support of fathering and the healthy handling of change, the Team offers the following services:



  • Fathering Workshops--Half-day or full-day intensive workshops on the background and importance of fathering.
  • EnGendering Resolutions--Organizational consultation and training centered around the creative management of conflict.
  • Family Consultation--Intensive team consultation for families in the process of developmental transition.
