The Consolations of Error : Essay on Developmental Epistemology

by: Robert Kalechofsky

"Evolution through error" must occur for cognitive growth both for individuals and civilizations.

The author argues that error is a natural condition of thinking, that all cultures and humans, in their intellectual development, engage in erring. Rather than bemoaning this, we should recognize erring as a creative force and as a probe to illuminate how we think.

Intellectual activity involves us in metaphorizing processes and should be understood within this dynamic and developmental framework. This is true of the thinking of children as well as the abstractions of scientists and mathematicians.

About Author:

Robert Kalechofsky is a philosopher of mathematics and science. His research and writing are involved in the relationship between mathematical and scientific thinking, and the metaphors and cultural forces that connect mathematical and scientific thinking to all thought processes. He has constructed mathematical models of Piaget's theory of cognition and argues that there is a deep connection between psychology, philosophy, and all thinking.

Dr. Kalechofsky is the author ofThe Persistence of Error.
