Timing Is Unfortunately Perfect
Libertary published its online edition of Roberta Kalechofsky's Vegetarian Judaism just as the nation was experiencing an outbreak of salmonella poisoning and the recall of hundreds of millions of tainted eggs from factory farms. The author warns about this sort of thing in her discussion of the horrors and health risks associated with agribusiness. Kalechofsky examines the conflict between consuming the products of factory farming and Jewish laws prohibiting animal suffering, environmental destruction, and waste. But her message applies to everyone who wants to live humanely and ethnically.
Another book on Libertary that addresses the consequences of industrial food production is the Center for Science in the Public Interest's Six Arguments for a Greener Diet. This book also has some things to say about factory-farmed chickens, including: more than 1,000 Americans die every year from foodborne illnesses linked to meat, poultry, and egg products; and raising great numbers of chickens increases the risk of "deadly" flu epidemics.
